It's 40 years since the legendary 'Om' Alec Khaoli went solo and started his Afro rock band Umoja in 1982. Time flies indeed. It has been a journey worth celebrating. Bra Om throughout his solo career has made a serious impact and contributed immensely in the music industry both locally in South Africa and abroad. He has shared his talent, skills and resources through the music he has made over the years. Bra Om was the first black person in the country to own a record studio in South Africa (!). It was called Fireworks Studio, located in Pimville, Soweto. This afforded him ample time to explore and create the best music. He was also one of the first artists to use a vocoder instrument, which at the time was a rare novelty to create a very distinctive sound and so beautiful to listen to. In this episode we have Kwela and ‘Om’ Alec taking us through the past 40 years look back at the great career, breaking down songs and some of his best memories.

    Versatile lyricist, vocalist and producer Kwelagobe “Kwela” Sekele (FKA PO or Po Box) comes from Soweto, via "Johazardburg" (Johannesburg), the City of Gold. Born in the year of Brenda & the Big Dudes' “Weekend Special” and Harari's “Street Sounds” — 1983 — Kwela's life and work are a reflection of his influences, inspirations, aspirations and memory. Unorthodox and a visionary, Kwela’s world of music is also made up of childhood memories of Kwaito and subplots drawn from Le Club, a legendary Joburg under-18s hip hop club). It’s also a landscape that includes Joburg poetics, jazz, early 2000s live band scenes and most of what is considered alternative, whether obscure or conveniently labelled “world music”. Against this fertile background, it was in 2004 when he joined the renowned band Kwani Experience that his métier took off. Kwani Experience inspired a generation with its bold and unapologetic afro-funk sound and aesthetic, setting stages ablaze around Africa and Europe while galvanising younger similar bands. In this episode of Viva Talks we sit down with Kwela, he takes us through his beginnings in music, the conception of the band 'Kwani Experience', where he finds inspiration and much more!
